- Snoring and sleep apnea treatment relies on an accurate evaluation and airway assessment by one of our specialists
- During your snoring and sleep apnea evaluation Dr. Barlow will discuss the options of treatment specifically tailored to your needs
- The following is an overview of treatment options for snoring and sleep apnea. Your optimum treatment options will be discussed with you by Dr. Barlow at the time of your consultation
Snoring and Sleep Apnea Procedures
Nasal Surgery – Septoplasty and Turbinoplasty
- The goal of nasal surgery in the treatment of Snoring and Sleep Apnea is to open the nasal airway allowing the freer passage of air into the throat
Nasal Surgery – Septoplasty
- The nasal septum divides the nasal cavity into two halves
- A deviated septum adversely affects breathing through both nasal cavities
- Correction helps with snoring and sleep apnea as well as daytime breathing
- See more information on Deviated SeptumÂ
Nasal Surgery – Turbinoplasty
- The turbinates are located on the side walls of the inside of the nose
- Turbinates humidify, warm and filter the air that you breathe
- Turbinate tissue can be swollen or enlarged causing the nose to plug up easily
- Coblation® Turbinoplasty is an office procedure that uses a radiofrequency wand that is passed within the turbinates to cause shrinkage and improve your nasal airway
- Sub-mucous turbinoplasty is a surgical procedure to reduce the size of the turbinates ; this involves the removal of the soft tissue and/or some of the bone inside the turbinate
Palate Surgery
- The goal of palate surgery in the treatment of Snoring and Sleep Apnea is to remove and/or reduce the soft palate tissue to reduce vibrations and airway resistance
Palate Surgery: UPPP (Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty)
- UPPP is a surgical procedure for obstructive sleep apnea
- In a UPPP the tonsils are usually removed along with redundant soft palate tissue
- It is effective in selected candidates
- Insurance companies may only cover a UPPP in patients who fail CPAP therapy
CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure)
- CPAP is considered the Gold Standard for treatment of moderate to severe sleep apnea
- Dr. Barlow is skilled in ordering and managing CPAP therapy for sleep apnea
- Even when a patient is able to tolerate CPAP regularly, surgical improvement of the nasal and oropharyngeal airway may help to reduce the CPAP pressures and improve CPAP tolerance
